Burns & McDonnell resolves a COVID-19 tracing case in hours instead of days

Matt Cox is a project manager at Burns & McDonnell. His team of 115 commercial fueling staff executes construction, design-build and engineering projects for commercial fueling clients in the aviation, trucking, railroad and marine markets. His primary objective: to control risk on the job site. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, his job became exponentially more complicated.

With 60+ craft workers on a single job site, contact tracing in the wake of a suspected or confirmed positive COVID-19 case was an inefficient, time-consuming challenge — interviewing every person on the job site, often through a site foreman, to figure out who had been within 6-feet of each other in the last 14 days. The workers would often, and understandably, forget who they’d been around. Matt needed to find a better solution or he risked his projects shutting down...

He researched his options. One put the onus on the workers to log their contacts. Another required a network of communication anchors to be installed on site, a costly undertaking. Then he found Instant-Trace™, and brought it to Jamie Butler, Vice President and Director of Corporate Safety & Health at Burns & McDonnell. Instant-Trace™ checked all their boxes.

“I appreciate the simplicity of the tool. It’s simple to use, simple to get started. And it doesn’t leave room for human error. The technology already has the answers. With Instant-Trace™, there’s no second guessing,” said Jamie.

Seven days after placing an order for Instant-Trace™, the system was up and running at one of Matt’s job sites in Houston. On the first day of operation, a worker reported a positive COVID-19 test. There were 64 other workers on site. In minutes, Matt was able to review his Instant-Trace™ data dashboard, identify the 6 people who had worked with the individual who tested positive, then narrow the list down to the 3 who’d been in contact with him for 15+ minutes. A quick conversation with each resulted in only 2 people needing to quarantine offsite. They were then able to communicate to the rest of the 62 workers on site that they weren’t at risk, restoring their peace of mind.

Instant-Trace™, created by Fleetwood Electronics, is a lightweight, wireless, wearable badge system that utilizes ultra-wideband technology to measure the distance between wearers within six-inches of accuracy, recording prolonged exposure data for quick contact tracing — all with a replaceable battery that lasts over two months. Fleetwood Electronics built a proprietary protocol on top of this technology, allowing an “anchorless” system. With just the badges and a mobile app, the system provided Matt and Jamie real value within a week of placing their order — resolving a COVID-19 tracing case in hours instead of days and keeping more workers on site.

“With COVID-19, we have to get it right the first time. We need to make immediate decisions with accurate information for our clients. With Instant-Trace™, we’re able to reduce the risk of clusters on the project site so we can keep working,” noted Jamie.

Instant-Trace™ is Metal Flow’s most cost-effective COVID-19 risk mitigation investment

Metal Flow Corporation makes highly-sophisticated custom metal components primarily for the automotive industry, shipping them all over the world from Holland, Michigan. Each of their 200 team members plays an integral role in the business and they’ve become like an extended family — one that prioritizes everyone’s safety, every day.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Metal Flow immediately took action to protect employees. They tried several methods to meet state mandated requirements, including taking everyone’s temperature and asking each worker health screening questions every day, logging everything. However, they felt they needed to do more.

The management team reflected on the risk this process, by itself, exposed them to. Eric Bronkema, Director of Information Technology, stated:

“How do you make a decision in the face of a positive case? You can overshoot and send everyone home, shut it all down. Or undershoot and put your team at risk. That’s scary. We needed actual data. Instant-Trace™ gave us that data, empowering us to do something concrete, and to do it efficiently, rather than making best guesses and running on gut feelings from our team on the floor,” said Eric.

Metal Flow made the investment in Instant-Trace™ early on in the COVID-19 pandemic, at a time when they were watching every dime they were spending. According to Kelly Springer, President and CEO, that investment has paid off.

“Instant-Trace™ has been the most cost-effective COVID-19 risk mitigation investment we’ve made to date. The system has more than yielded its ROI as we have navigated this new landscape — giving us the data we needed to both keep our team safe in our work environment and keep a key business unit operational for our customers,” said Kelly.

Since implementing Instant-Trace™, Metal Flow has been able to quickly access their data dashboard, isolate and analyze contact tracing information, complete the appropriate requirements and get back to business. Day to day, the badges each worker wears are a visual reminder to social distance.

The data the system provides even highlighted a potential risk on one of their teams. They were able to be proactive, putting new shift schedules in place and creating contingency plans to reduce the risk of potential virus transmission.

“The business risk mitigation Instant-Trace™ has afforded us is invaluable,” continued Kelly. “It’s a simple, user-friendly, easy-to-adopt solution that takes the burden away from our team members. Safety is a priority at Metal Flow, and with this system, we’re walking our talk.”
